Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Yesterday, in conjunction with National Coming Out Day, members of the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and the Athletic Department staffed a table in New Commons where the campus community was invited to sign the Bates Ally Pledge and to receive a Bates Ally wristband. The Pledge reads as follows:

I pledge to help lead the Bates community to respecting and welcoming all persons, regardless of their perceived or actual sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Beginning right now, I will do my part to promote the best of Bates College by making all persons feel respected and valued.

I am so pleased to report that we had just shy of 1,000 students, faculty and staff sign the Pledge!

The campus response was so overwhelming that, regretfully, we ran out of wristbands. But we have ordered more and I will send out an announce when those arrive so that anyone who still wishes to have a Bates Ally wristband will be able to stop by and get one.

Sincerest thanks to the SAAC who led this effort, to the Athletics staff who assisted, and to the campus community which responded in such an positive manner!

With gratitude and pride,

Kevin
